AI in the Kitchen

AI in the Kitchen

With technology and innovation ever growing, AI has taken over industries with revolutionary ideas and seemingly instantaneous answers. It has been an ongoing topic of how impactful AI is and whether it can replace human-required jobs. This raises the question... Could AI learn the five senses and use that information to provide solutions in the sensory-related industries – such as food?

In the food and beverage manufacturing industry, there have already been ground-breaking inventions utilising AI and technology. Some examples include the ‘electronic tongue’ which can taste foods by detecting molecular components of food, and the use of AI-inspired gastronomy to create exciting and new flavours. Technologies like these can reduce the need for human tasters, providing a more efficient and unbiased method for testing food flavours. The electronic tongue could alleviate challenges like repeatedly testing spicy foods, which can strain human taste buds, giving more consistent results.

Whilst AI may provide unbiased and systematic results, it lacks human creativity and taste buds that simply cannot be replicated. Aspects such as the presentation of food, colour, texture and dining ambiance significantly influence perception of taste. Whether enjoying a meal surrounded by family and friends, or in a fancy restaurant with dimmed lights, there are a multitude of emotions and preferences which play a crucial role in the perception of food.

As both the food industry and AI technology grows, it's important to find a healthy balance. Human creativity and judgement simply can't be replaced when it comes to understanding food and flavour, ensuring the final product resonates with the intended demographic - people. So... is there room in your kitchen for AI?
